The September 29 Protest against War and Racism in Washington...exceeded our expectations! When the hundreds of those at the head of the march reached the top of the hill near the Capitol Building, and turned around, there was a mass exclamation of awe. The streets were packed with people and signs for blocks and blocks...at least twenty thousand strong!
CSPAN covered the Freedom Plaza rally live during the day, and repeated the coverage at 10:30 PM and 3am the next morning. Every one who attended seemed encouraged by the day's events, and motivated to go back to our communities and do more work to further swell our ranks to stop a new war and increased racism.

Demonstrations were also held in the Netherlands, Spain and Greece. Over 10,000 people filled Amsterdam's central square, the Dam, on Sunday for an open air meeting. It was the largest peace action in the Netherlands since the 1980s, when half a million people marched against the deployment of NATO missiles in that country.
"Justice, not revenge" was the main slogan of the protest, which included people who had previously marched against the Gulf War and the 1999 war on Yugoslavia. Also present were resistance fighters who had fought against Hitler's occupation of the Netherlands between 1940 and 1945.
In Barcelona, Spain, 5,000 people attended a rally and marched behind a banner that read: "No More Victims — For Peace." In a statement read at the end of the rally, the protesters urged the Spanish government not to support any US military intervention or NATO retaliation.
In Washington DC, those marching expressed heartfelt sorrow for the victims of the terror attacks and their families, combined with a determination that the attacks not be used as a pretext for US aggression in Central Asia or the Middle East. Protesters also denounced racist attacks against Arab-Americans and Muslims in the US, and accused the Bush administration of carrying out a sweeping attack on civil liberties.
"Our Grief is Not a Cry for War", "Violence Begets Violence", and "An Eye for an Eye Leaves the Whole World Blind" were among the slogans on the signs and banners carried by the marchers.
The demonstrators included rescue workers and volunteers who had searched for survivors in New York City.
"Like a lot of people here I want justice done, but I don't want to see the destruction of more innocent lives," said James Creedon, a rescue worker. "We don't want to see a hundred or a thousand more World Trade Centers in this country or abroad."

Two young workers from Brooklyn, New York attended the rally. Andrew said,
"I watched as the trade center collapsed, from the roof of my apartment in Brooklyn. I can't describe the feeling of shock, terror and panic that I went through. To think of how many people were killed, and of those who were trapped inside the building, is horrible.
"I did nothing but watch TV to try and find out what was going on. By about the second day, when all the politicians were coming on and talking about a unified America, I started getting a realization that they were going to use this to justify more killing.
"The scariest part of the event is that those of us who want a peaceful solution will not get a hearing. It is like the media is a propaganda arm of the government."

Joehoon, who was working in an office near the Empire State Building at the time of the attack, [said]
"... I do believe that the politicians are using this as a rallying cry for war and that the majority of people want a war. But people also are not getting the view that there might be another solution. When there were 3,000 to 5,000 people in a peace march at Union Square, neither the New York Times nor any of the local New York papers reported it."

Most of those present at the Washington rally came from New York, Philadelphia and Washington DC, but others traveled from Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Carolina, Florida and as far away as Seattle. The vast majority of those participating were college students.
Nearly 20 percent of the 1,300 students who attend Bard College in upstate New York were at the rally. Three hundred students came from Oberlin College in Ohio, despite a warning by the school's president that there would be violence and bloodshed at the event. Also in attendance were a sizable number of young workers and veterans of the Vietnam protest movement.
"I came here to show support for international justice and a peaceful conflict resolution," said Nat, a web developer from New Jersey. "... we have to understand that the people of Afghanistan are no more responsible for terrorism than the American people are for the behavior of the American government.
"If it gets to the point where we can't speak freely then we are in lot of trouble in this country. I understand that Bill Maher of the television program 'Politically Incorrect' had to apologize for disagreeing with Bush, or else his career would have been dead meat. If they stop people from disagreeing with rallying around the flag, then this is the worst kind of nationalism."

The news media, which has functioned as a conduit for the White House and the Pentagon since September 11, virtually ignored the protests. Most TV networks gave scant coverage to the march if they reported it at all. USA Today ran one paragraph in its news brief section. The New York Times ran a small article on its inside pages about the various protests. [...]
While condemning the attacks, many of the marchers blamed US foreign policy in the Middle East for creating a climate in which terrorists could recruit people willing to carry out suicide attacks against the US.
"These things happen for a reason," said Rachel, a young professional worker from Washington DC. "We would be remiss if we did not investigate our political and economic policies that caused it. After all the death, destruction and tragedy that have taken place, I think the most important lesson is rethinking America's interaction with that region of the world. ... I am not for the Taliban, who oppress women and oppose education, but I am not for war. I think you have to understand what policies are behind this attack, and change them."

Antoinette, a student from Maryland College of Art, said,
"The World Trade Center disaster was a horrible event. Most people are just waving the flag. But we all have to change. We have to think about things more deeply.
"I think Bush liked this incident because it saved his presidency, although he does not seem to have a clear direction of what he wants to do. US foreign policy is based on very narrow and selfish interests which produce a lot of hatred."

War is the problem, not the solution
Unless the people of America stop Unpresident Bush and NATO from carrying out a new and wider war in the Middle East, the United States Military will mass-murder yet more thousands of civilian men, women and helpless children there.
If the bloodthirsty Pentagon has its way, the number of innocent victims will grow from the thousands to the tens of thousands and possibly more. A new, wider U.S./NATO war in the Middle East can only lead to an escalating cycle of violence.

Racist attacks since September 11
Innocent Arab American and Muslim people in the United States have been facing racist attacks since September 11. These attacks have also been committed in Britain, Australia, Europe and elsewhere. People in other communities of color have been abused as well. They are facing racist attacks and harassment in their communities, on their jobs and at mosques.

"Hundreds of attacks [in the U.S.] have been committed against innocent Asian-Americans and Arab-Americans over the past week, including assaults, fire bombings, acts of vandalism against mosques, and at least three murders. The victims have been targeted because of their skin color or because they wore turbans, veils or other outward signs of Muslim religion or Asian origin."

These violent crimes of obscene racism and ignorant prejudice are acts of evil by those who commit them, and a disgrace to all those who support them.
Racial hatred is a mental and emotional disease — a corrosive poison that is not indulged by decent, healthy, honest people.
Meanwhile, as racist psychopaths are attacking men, women and children who look even vaguely like Arabs, the criminal United States Corporate Mafia Government is attempting to strangle the civil liberties of all American citizens. The U.S. government seeks to create a climate of fear wherein it is impossible for progressive people to speak in freedom.
The unelected Bush administration is attempting to take advantage of the WTC crisis to militarize American society through a vast expansion of police powers that are intended to severely restrict basic democratic rights.
Now is the time for all people of conscience, all people who oppose racism and war to come together.
The International ANSWER Coalition wants to keep the momentum from Sept. 29 going by encouraging all individuals around the country and abroad to organize a day of local and regional actions for October 27th. This way we can continue to build the visibility and voice of this new anti-war movement.
We also encourage people to set up ANSWER chapters in their schools, community centers and towns to take on the organizing for this day of action.

Another mass-media lie-campaign is underway

The latest stage of the U.S./NATO bombing is underway — this time it's another propaganda bombardment by by the venal corporate mass-media lie-machine.
In its June 30th edition, the mouthpiece of the U.S. State Department (a.k.a. The New York Times) trumpeted that the "guilty" verdict of the U.S.-created-and-financed Kangaroo Court, the ICTY Hague Tribunal, must be accepted by the Serbian people. The Hague Tribunal is financed by the CIA-connected Soros Foundation, Time Warner, Inc. and the Rockefeller Foundation. He who pays the piper calls the tune.
With its usual Orwellian doublespeak, the N.Y. Times huffs that the Serbians must "take responsibility" for all the alleged "deeds of war" as a condition of "reconciliation."
Translation:
"Whore yourselves totally, just like the rest of NATO-dominated Europe, or we'll turn you into another Iraq. Blame yourselves for our war crimes against you, or face our continued political subversion and economic sanctions."

To pull the wool over the eyes of the American sheeple, the corporate mass-media is engaged in a propaganda campaign of lie-saturated radio and T.V. broadcasts of the show-trials of democratically elected, former President Milosevic and a growing number of other Yugoslav patriots. This U.S. government-controlled "news" media has made very clear, in spite of its deceit, that the abduction and show-trial of Milosevic is just the latest act of the ongoing program of U.S. government bullying and subversion aimed at beating and bribing the Yugoslav people into submission.
Unfortunately for the U.S. government, the Serbian people have a long history of heroic resistance to brutal imperialism. For centuries they fought the Ottoman Turkish Empire and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It's only natural that they should now resist the American Empire.
One million Serbians died fighting the Nazis during WWII. While the Croatians and Albanians closely allied themselves with the demonic Nazis, the Serbians maintained their honor and fought back. While the Bulgarian, Hungarian and Romanian governments whored themselves to the Nazis, the Serbians alone maintained their honor and fought back.
The Serbians even rescued 526 U.S. Air Force bomber pilots and crew who were shot down behind the lines in World War II. While Albanians and Croatians shot American pilots or turned them over to the Germans, the Serbians created an underground rescue network. Even women and children protected American pilots from the German soldiers — sometimes with their very lives. The Serbian women and children of an entire village were burned alive by German soldiers because the women and children refused to tell the soldiers where they were hiding American pilots.
And you'll never hear a single word about any of this in the propaganda-saturated, government-controlled American mass-media.
For the last ten years the United States, with Germany as a junior partner, has been the new Nazi power in the Balkans. And the ancient and honorable tradition of Serbian resistance has continued.

The strategy of people like Mahatma Ghandi and Judi Bari, that of non-violent civil-disobedience, is generally the most effective way for people, both within America and around the world, to battle the virtually demonic United States government and military.
I'm not advocating anything like passive martyrdom, however. If some individuals are courageous enough to be martyrs, that's very good indeed. Their martyrdom will be the powerful sparks that ignite the coming Revolution. But people also have a natural right to defend themselves. It is also courageous and good for people to defend themselves against any and all aggressors, to defend their friends and family and anyone else they choose by whatever means they see fit. It's just a question of realistic strategy. How can people effectively defend themselves against a bloodthirsty Beast that has slaughtered people by the millions already?
Obviously the perpetrators of American Empire deserve a violent fate. The U.S. government and military are nothing more than sadistic machines of genocidal war crime. But who (besides an "Act of God") has the firepower to give the Pentagon, the White House and the CIA what they so richly deserve?
The point to keep in mind is that the U.S. government and military have no qualms whatsoever about committing acts of massive state terrorism, on any pretext they choose, real or invented, against whole populations of innocent civilian people. And if any group or individual dares to give the American Empire a taste of its own medicine, that provides the Imperial world-rulers with precisely the public relations ammunition they need to commit their ongoing crimes against humanity.
For this very reason I'm quite sure that the U.S. government actually wants relatively small-scale terrorist acts to be committed against it. Such tiny and utterly useless acts of retribution make the apologists of American Empire feel smugly self-righteous and justified. In fact such acts are worse than useless since they provide the mass-media propaganda-machine with golden opportunities to distract the public from America's own massive and relentless state terrorism.
And precisely because it has such a high propaganda value, I have no doubt that the U.S. government has in the past, and will continue to, covertly commit its own terrorist acts against American citizens and property. If the incident is international it provides the needed excuse for a pre-planned campaign of American state terrorism. If the incident is domestic it provides a perfect excuse for increased police-state repression within the U.S. It is entirely in the self-interest of the United States government, therefore, to commit limited, covert acts of terrorism against American citizens, and even against it's own expendable employees in embassies and bureaucratic offices.
People who don't want to believe that the U.S. government is that ruthless should stop to think for a moment about what America has done throughout the 20th century. Any government that will commit several bloody genocides totalling millions of people is not going to feel the slightest bit of guilt over violently murdering a few people, even its own people, in a self-made, politically helpful terrorist incident.
Those who don't already know need to understand that the American military and CIA are composed of people who, by any clinical standard, are literally homicidal psychopaths. They are quite happy to slaughter the civilian men, women and children of entire nations that dare merely to be independent of the United States. The bloodthirsty butchery, torture and terrorization, by the CIA and the American military, of millions of helpless civilian people in Yugoslavia, Iraq, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, the Philippines, Korea, Libya, Cuba, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Colombia and many other countries are prime examples.
The historical record makes it very clear that human life has no value for the U.S. government and military. They are in fact an utterly ruthless, corporate capitalist mafia who will murder and torture anyone at all who is a serious threat to their wealth and power. And the greatest threat to their wealth and power exists not outside the borders of the U.S., but within it.
Most Americans can't even face up to what their own government and military have done to people around the world for the last 100 years. It's no wonder, therefore, that they won't dare face the fact that the U.S. government, police and military are also perfectly happy to murder American men, women and children. The masses of American sheeple are mentally sleeping in front of their flickering brainwash-boxes (TV). Meanwhile, the various militarized urban police forces, county sheriff's departments, the National Guard, FEMA, the FBI, ATF, DEA, the U.S. Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and many other government agencies have become very well armed and prepared to enforce a violent and fascist American police state.
The FBI's murder of White men, women and children in Waco and Ruby Ridge, the Philadelphia pigs' murder of Black men, women and children in the MOVE house and the FBI terrorism and murder of Lakota men, women and children on the Pine Ridge Reservation provide some relatively well-known examples of what is done to people who dare to be very publicly defiant of America's plutocratic overlords. The police brutality of non-violent protestors in Seattle, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Washington D.C. are examples of how the U.S. Corporate Mafia Government deals violently even with peaceful public protest.
But protest we must, in every non-violent way possible. And one of the most essential forms of peaceful protest is the withholding of taxes. Do you really want to provide funds for the orgy of murder, rape and torture of men, women and children in Central and South America? That is precisely what American tax dollars have paid for in Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala from the 1980s to the present day. And precisely that sort of bloody evil is what $1.3 billion of American taxpayers' money is paying for in Colombia right now.
Is it okay with you that you're working every day to pay the debts for the expensive, high-tech slaughter of helpless civilian men, women and children in Yugoslavia in 1999 and in Iraq from 1991 to the present day? Those cruise missiles with which the heroic U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force butcher children cost over $1,000,000 each. If you've got a genuine moral conscience then you need to be a tax resister.
Every dollar we pay to the U.S. government is a dollar they can use for their vicious military campaigns around the world. Therefore if we pay taxes to the U.S. government we must admit we are directly supporting their evil. There are no two ways about it — U.S. taxpayers are accomplices to U.S. government crimes against humanity. But we don't have to be accomplices. We aren't slaves (yet) and we can definitely do something about these horrors. To really "get 'em where they live" we've got to kick 'em in their budgets.

Tax resistance has a long and highly honorable history in the United States. In fact, this country was founded by people who refused to pay taxes to the oppressive British government. Henry David Thoreau spent a night in jail for refusing to pay taxes for the unjust and brutal Mexican-American War. His famous essay, "On the Duty of Civil disobedience," has inspired people for 152 years, people like Leo Tolstoy, Mahatma Ghandi and Martin Luther King, Jr.

It is estimated that at least 10,000 morally courageous U.S. citizens are openly redirecting their tax dollars away from the criminal U.S. government and toward positive, decent purposes. The U.S. government and its IRS depend on psychological intimidation to prevent that number from growing. The IRS would like you to think it can legally throw you in jail for refusing to pay taxes. But it has no such legal power. It can recommend criminal prosecution, but it does so only in cases of "serious and flagrant violation," and then only after a full investigation. It does eventually collect from about 50% of tax resisters, but it costs the IRS about $4000 for every $1000 they collect. Obviously not too cost-effective. If millions of people refused to pay their taxes I think the IRS would be as confounded as "Lord" Mountbattan.
There are tax resisters who have never been pursued after more than 10 years of open, courageous resistance. Of the tens of thousands of tax resisters who have refused, on moral grounds, to pay taxes over the years, only about twenty have ever been jailed. In each of those cases there were other alleged violations involved beyond the refusal to pay taxes that go to military purposes.
In the summer of 2000 seven tax resisters made a public show of trying to turn themselves in to IRS headquarters in Washington, D.C. IRS officials refused even to talk to them, locking them out of the office and hoping to avoid any more publicity.

Varieties of Tax Resistance

You can choose to live in simplicity, making below the taxable income. Highly recommended — if you can live in a tolerable environment. This is my personal choice. The beauty of this approach is that you have nothing to hide, no IRS collection suits to battle, and there is absolutely nothing (so far) the U.S. government can do about it.

There are personal psychological benefits as well. If you are not addicted to materialism you know that the fewer possessions you have the freer you feel. You know that time, freedom, satisfying activity and real friends are infinitely more valuable than all the money and possessions in the world.

You can refuse to pay the 3% federal excise tax on your phone bill. Thousands of good people in America are already doing this. Phone companies will not turn off your phone. In fact, they even have their computers set up to delete this amount from your next bill. This eliminates several million dollars per year from the military budget. Of course that's a microscopic fraction of the $300 Billion the Pentagon bloodsucks from taxpayers every year, but it's worth doing anyway on moral principle. So many people are now doing this that there is no way the government can enforce payment.

The only risk involved is that your government file (and everybody with a Social Security number has one) will definitely be amended to label you as some kind of unpatriotic "subversive." But hey, that's a real honor!

You can refuse to pay a percentage of your federal income tax, such as the 49% that is currently vampirized by the Pentagon death machine. It's recommended that you send a letter along with your tax forms explaining why you are doing this. The letter should also have the formal "CC:" (carbon copy) notation at the bottom, naming your elected representatives to whom you're sending copies. This is just to make it all as public and "on the record" as possible, not because your "representatives" will be helpful in any way. More likely than not your so-called "representatives" are loyal whores of the Federal government.

The risk is that the IRS may initiate collection procedures within 1 to 3 years. If so, they will send you letters demanding payment, including interest and penalty charges. This will likely continue for several years. There is the possibility that at some point the IRS will simply stop harassing you and shelve your case. But if they decide to pursue it they will start threatening to "seize" (steal) your assets, such as your bank account, your paycheck and your property in the amount they say you owe. Many people hide their assets from the Infernal Rip-off Service in a variety of ways, including overseas accounts. But the U.S. government is putting increasing political pressure on the nations that profit from being overseas "tax havens," so I would guess that using them will be increasingly risky in the future.

You can refuse to pay all of your federal income tax. This incurs the same risk as above. This way you can be certain that none of your money is paying for the mass-murder, torture, rape and impoverishment of people anywhere in the world.

The more money involved, however, the more the IRS salivary glands will be activated and the greater the chance that collection procedures will be initiated and pursued. But the more people there are who refuse to pay IRS extortion money the less risk there will be for everybody. There is relative safety in numbers.

You can take the money you refuse to squander on the Pentagon and put it in a special escrow account for "refused military taxes" such as those listed below. Your money earns interest and is combined with other un-squandered tax monies to fund non-profit projects that serve peace, environmental and human rights programs. The Seattle fund has about $350,000 of refused tax dollars invested in such projects. Your money can be withdrawn at any time if it's needed.

You can use the money you have rescued from the tax collector and put it to good use supporting projects of your own choosing. It's recommended that you keep detailed records of this to show the IRS. The records are helpful for your legal defense, demonstrating your support of positive, healthy social programs that, unlike those of the Pentagon, actually don't murder people. (What a concept!)

You can support other tax resisters in demonstrations, letters to newspapers and financial contributions to tax resistance groups.
